8 home water filters TESTED

We’ve rounded up 8 Home Water Filters and tested them, so you don’t have to! Here’s what we found:

1. A water pitcher – the Waterdrop Lucid 10-Cup Water Filter Pitcher, for example is the first, and most affordable, port of call for anyone wanting a home water filter. This one is designed to fit neatly into the fridge and provide your family with chilled, filtered water. With a 10-cup capacity, larger families will be refilling the jug on a loop, and the filters reduce rather than remove heavy metals and chlorine. The flow rate is pretty good, and all-round, it’s cheap and cheerful, and helps to cut down on a few of the contaminants in your tap water.

2. Water filter bottles are popular for on-the-go or homeworking at your desk, but do they pull their weight when it comes to being a home water filter? Convenience is good. The concept is good. The reality? Few bottle filters remove enough contaminants to be a real contender, but they can be great in a survival situation or on a long hike when you can’t carry enough water with you. The downside is that they tend to be heavy, and just like regular water bottles, can be prone to bacteria and mold.

3. Are faucet home water filters worth a try? Like anything, the quality varies enormously. We road-tested a Brita Basic Faucet Water Filter System, as we figured that a household name would be the right place to start. The first thing to note is that… it’s bulky. To be honest, most faucet filters are – no one buys one for their looks. Again, it’s great to take out some contaminants, but a badly fitted tap filter can actually increase the risk of contamination. Plus, you lose a lot of water pressure.

4. What’s the deal with Reverse Osmosis and is it the answer to getting a home water filter? In short: no. RO water is filtered so thoroughly that it is ‘dead’ water. In other words, it is water that has been stripped of the vital minerals your body needs to thrive. Great in an emergency, but not an answer for long-term, healthy home water filtration.

5. Are Whole House Filters the whole answer? They can be effective, but does any whole-house filter perform to the same filtration standards as a Tyent water ionizer? The quality varies tremendously and once the filter is fitted, you lose control over the ability to – for example – switch between alkaline and acidic water, as you can with a Tyent water ionizer.

6. How about container water filters, such as the BRITA Flow water filter tank? These are often a step up from a jug filter, and usually have a decent filter that reduces chlorine, heavy metals and particles from old pipework. However, the majority of the companies making these filters stay silent when it comes to contaminants such as Chromium-6, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals and drug residues, to name just a few. Many tank filters also come with the attendant risk of limescale and chlorophyta (green algae) build-up, which can cause:

  • Mild respiratory issues
  • Skin irritation
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headaches

7. Sediment filters are often used when your source water is contaminated with larger particles and debris. Sediment filters are similar to a net – porous enough to allow water to flow, but able to capture the particulate matter in your source water. For what they are, they’re great, but they are not designed to deal with the chemical stew of toxins that flow in the water to millions of homes.

8. Tyent Water Ionizers have the most technologically advanced home water filters on the market. For example, our Chromium-6 Filter is certified by the Water Quality Association and the NSF. It is uniquely equipped to deal with some of the most toxic contaminants in drinking water, including:

  • 9% of Chromium-6
  • 90-95% of fluoride
  • 99% of lead
  • Radium
  • Mercury
  • Nickel
  • Chlorine
  • Iron
  • Hydrogen Sulfide
  • Manganese
  • Chloramines
