Reverse osmosis. It’s a fancy scientific term to describe a process of water purification, but most people probably don’t know what reverse osmosis (RO) actually is.
That, in itself, is an issue because without understanding the process it is difficult to see the disadvantages of reverse osmosis. After reading this, you will understand that reverse osmosis water is not safe for human consumption long term, nor for the environment.
What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse osmosis is a process of removing contaminant from source water by applying pressure and running the water through a series of artificial, semi-permeable membranes. It is used around the world for many different water purification purposes.
At home RO machines are commonly used to “improve” tap water and some industrial scale water purification plants also use them. Unfortunately, reverse osmosis is not as effective a water treatment process as it may seem because of the massive problems it creates.
3 Reasons to Never Drink RO Water
1. Reverse Osmosis Water is Devoid of Minerals
Part of the definition of RO water is that it is “pure.” This is taken to mean that all the metals, nutrients, bacteria and viruses have been removed from RO water; both the good and the bad. Recent worldwide studies have focused on the health risks of drinking demineralized water and discovered that,
“Drinking water should contain minimum levels of certain essential minerals…Sufficient evidence is now available to confirm the health consequences from drinking water deficient in calcium or magnesium.”

2. It Doesn’t Hydrate as Well as Alkaline Water
Whereas alkaline water actually hydrates the body more efficiently than tap water, all indications are that reverse osmosis water is less hydrating than even untreated water. This is because RO water has zero electrolytes since they are all eliminated during reverse osmosis.
Zero Electrolytes and No Antioxidants = Less Hydrating Water
Of course, alkaline water is rich in antioxidants and electrolytes that help to hydrate the body and neutralize harmful free radicals.
3. RO Is Extremely Wasteful
A 2013 study by researchers at North Dakota State University revealed that,
“An RO unit delivering 2 gallons of treated water per day may discharge 8 to 15 gallons of waste water per day to the septic system.”

That means that at home reverse osmosis machines expel 4 to 8 times the amount of waste as they do potable water!
