Why is it better to drink alkaline water after exercising, rather than tap or bottled water? Isn’t all water the same?
“After a week of trying Tyent ionized water out on myself, I could not believe the difference I felt after the extreme efforts of training and effort.” Clara Hughes, Olympic Gold Medalist
Alkaline water is different and drinking it can transform how your body feels and recovers post-exercise. Here’s why:
- Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular water. This is a really important factor when you consider that during exercise, your body is producing lactic acid – a byproduct of anaerobic respiration. Intense workouts can result in lactic acid build-up – does a burning sensation in your muscles sound familiar? That’s lactic acid. Drinking alkaline water helps to rebalance your body faster and helps to counter the effect of lactic acid accumulation.
- Alkaline water behaves slightly differently inside your body. It travels from your stomach to the small intestine faster than regular water. This process is known as gastric emptying, and alkaline water does it with great efficiency! The real-feel result? You feel hydrated more thoroughly and in less time than if you were drinking regular water.
- This 2016 clinical study looked at the effects of drinking alkaline water following a relatively gentle exercise session, compared with regular water. The test subjects who drank alkaline water had lower blood viscosity than the test subjects who drank standard water, with the ‘alkaline group’ seeing a drop in blood viscosity of 6.3%, compared with 3.36% in the ‘regular water’ group. Blood viscosity is linked to hydration levels, with lower blood viscosity denoting higher levels of hydration. In simple terms, the test subjects who drank alkaline water post-exercise were better hydrated than those who were given regular water.
Alkaline water is in the kit bags, changing rooms and gymnasiums of some of our greatest athletes and sportspeople. Olympians such as dual gold medal winner Clara Hughes; A-list coaches such as Tom ‘‘The Quarterback Whisperer’ House – trainer to Tom Brady, Greg Maddux, Nolan Ryan, and Drew Brees, among others – and countless household names from across the sports spectrum.
“We have been singing the praises of alkaline water for 8-9 years now…The bottom of our athletic food pyramid is hydration…and we’ve known for a number of years that an alkaline body recovers and heals faster than an acidic body.” Tom House
