What Are the 7 Types of Poop?

We’re aware of some of the visual signs of how we’re doing, health-wise: our skin, eyes, tongue and fingernails are often barometers of wellbeing that we can see and assess, albeit with a layman’s eye.

But what about our poop? Measured according to the Bristol Stool Scale, our poop tells us how our digestive system is doing, whether we’re properly hydrated, and all manner of other things.

So, what is your poop trying to tell you?

7 Types of Poop and What They Mean

1. Pellets

If your poop takes the form of small, separate pellets, then drink more water – it’s a sign of dehydration.

2. Solid, sausage shape but with lumps

Another sign of being dehydrated, and possibly lacking in essential minerals such as magnesium. Stools with this appearance can also be an indicator of constipation.

3. Log-shaped with a few cracks on the surface

If your poop is like this, then give yourself a pat on the back – this is a sign of both good digestive health and hydration.

4. Smooth, narrow sausage shape

Again, this is a healthy type of poop that suggests your hydration levels and digestive system are in good shape.

5. A number of small, softer stools

If you produce stools like this for more than two or three days, increase the amount of fiber you eat by consuming more fresh vegetables and unprocessed cereal. If passing this type of stool persists, then consider having a chat with your doctor.

6. Softer, ragged stool appearance

You might be suffering from diarrhea or have some inflammation in your gastrointestinal tract. Support good gut health by eating right: fruits, vegetables, gluten-free grains, herbs, spices – fennel, turmeric, and cayenne pepper are all good ones to try – and fermented dairy products. Drinking plenty of ionized hydrogen water has been observed to support healthy gut microbiota.

7. Watery stools

If your food is passing through your system without forming firm stools, then you likely have diarrhea, a possible case of food poisoning, an allergy/food intolerance or a lack of dietary fiber. The chances are that you’re also dehydrated. Change your diet and switch up to the fiber-rich foods we’ve already mentioned, drink lots of water, and check in with your doctor if things don’t improve.
