What is The South Beach Diet?

The sunny-sounding South Beach diet is based around the glycemic index, with carbs and fats placed on a sliding scale of ‘good’ to ‘bad.’

The diet is approached in 3 phases with a lengthy list of foods (mainly carbs) restricted for an initial two-week period. Despite the food-group restrictions, once you move to the third phase of the regimen, the South Beach Diet has the potential to be relatively moderate and wholesome.

What can I eat on The South Beach Diet?

During the first phase, you can eat lean meat, chicken, eggs and seafood. Non-starchy vegetables are permitted along with certain types of beans and nuts. Some healthy fats are also allowed during the first phase.

In the second phase, you can start to reintroduce more fats, starchy vegetables and fruit, grains and alcohol.

In the 3rd phase, although arguably no foods are strictly off-limits, you should be instinctively self-restricting, having ‘re-educated’ your palate and become more aware of healthy, balanced portion sizes.

How many carbs can I have per day on The South Beach Diet?

Carbs aren’t counted as such – but they are restricted. The management of both calories and carbs – and therefore weight loss – is the result of eating the right foods and sensible portion control.

What do doctors and experts say about The South Beach Diet?

Learning about what sends your blood sugar soaring and discovering how foods with a low glycemic index can give you sustained, stable energy levels is a good thing. The South Beach Diet was invented by a cardiologist, and some doctors believe that a regimen like the South Beach Diet can potentially lower your cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack and diabetes.

As with any major change in your nutritional intake, check with your doctor first before embarking on a diet.

What type of water or beverages are best to drink on The South Beach Diet?

Non-milk tea and one regular caffeine coffee are permitted, along with lemon and herbal teas. Avoid alcohol for the first phase, and then only drink it moderately during the second and third phases.

Lots of water and diluted fresh juice are recommended throughout the diet.
