How To Stay Hydrated This Summer

Beat the summer heat and stay cool and hydrated with these proven tips below…

Tip #1: Replenish Lost Nutrients

The fun in the heat and the summer sun can present a challenge in staying hydrated adequately.

Hydration is important. However, with the increase in fluid loss through sweating and the lack of water intake, we lose precious electrolytes.

Nutrients can help your body absorb whatever fluids you drink. Electrolytes and alkaline minerals such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, and calcium are especially important because they are critical to healthy nerve and muscle function.

Tip #2: Drink the Right Water

Water will hydrate you…but when you drink hydrogen-rich alkaline water made with a top-quality water ionizer, you’re providing yourself with a more effective source of hydration that you just can’t get with sports drinks or bottled water.

Hydrogen water is an optimal choice due to its powerful ability to protect against cell-damaging free radicals.

In our bodies, hydrogen functions as an antioxidant, helping to prevent cell damage and inflammation, protect DNA, and combat out-of-control cell growth.

Tip #3: Pay Attention to Color

The color of your urine is a key indicator of your hydration level:

  • If your urine is a clear to light lemonade color, it’s likely that you are properly hydrated.
  • Dark yellow urine typically signals mild dehydration and need for immediate rehydration.

Bear in mind that some supplements, such as B vitamins, can cause bright yellow urine.

Tip #4: Be Mindful of Alcohol Use

Alcohol use has a dehydrating effect due to its diuretic effect.

The ethanol in alcohol suppresses your body’s production of ADH, or antidiuretic hormone which is used by the body to reabsorb water.

Alcohol causes the body to pass more liquid through urination resulting in mild dehydration.

Tip #5: Track Your Water Intake

If you’re looking to:

  • Get healthier
  • Lose weight
  • Stop hunger and cravings (especially sugar cravings!)
  • Prevent fatigue
  • Reduce joint pain
  • Get clearer skin

…or all the above, I can’t stress the importance of water intake tracking enough!

It may sound like extra work, but water intake tracking can make a big difference when it comes to reaching your health and fitness goals.

Making a note of when and how much water you drink can keep you accountable and ensure that you don’t forget to drink up.

We want to drink half our body weight of water in ounces daily. For example, if you weigh 120 lbs., drinking 60 oz of water a day is ideal.

Simply jotting down how much you drink every day and using a water bottle as measurement will help you to also keep track.

Keeping a record of how much water you drink is an excellent tool to ensure you stay hydrated and reach your hydration goals this summer.

Other ways to track water include:

  • Drinking water first thing in the morning
  • Keep a water bottle with you wherever you go to serve as a visual reminder
  • Set an alarm on your phone
  • Make infused water to encourage you to drink more
  • Using a hydration app such as Waterlogged or Aqualert

New habits take practice to form — remember, persistence is key!
