Water Ionizer Safety

My grandmother, like so many of her generation, was big on preserves and finding ways of storing any surplus for leaner times.  Part of the preserving process included canning, which meant that her pantry shelves were lined with dozens of bottles and jars containing everything from beans and artichokes, to jams and chicken.

Taking Responsibility

Among this vision of bucolic bounty, I remember my grandmother sternly telling me about why it was so vital to bottle foods safely.  The poisonous spores of botulism thrive where good canning practice isn’t followed, and that particular deadly toxin cannot be seen, smelled or tasted.

In other words, danger isn’t always immediately obvious. We need to take responsibility for fact checking and never cut corners when it comes to our health.

Imported Water Ionizers

And so it is with water ionizers.  Cheap imports are slipping past overtaxed FDA checkpoints and finding their way onto the open market.

When you search for a water ionizer online, you’ll probably encounter some pretty cheap ones, which almost certainly originate from China or Taiwan. They look fine, and they’re cheap, so it’s a no brainer, right?

Wrong.  Some ionizers – even those that seem like an absolute bargain – have design flaws that can’t be spotted easily.  More seriously, these water ionizers can lack proper certification.  A machine that doesn’t meet the minimum safety standard isn’t ever a bargain.

Deadly Irony

Imported ionizers from China and Taiwan, that frequently arrive complete with bogus “lead-free certification,” might well be anything but lead-free.  Imagine buying a “bargain” ionizer to filter out contaminants from your source water, only to discover that the ionizer itself contains lead.

Like botulism, and just as deadly, lead cannot be seen, tasted or smelled.  Scary, if you have no idea whether the “lead free” sticker on the side of that cheap ionizer is real or not.
