Are 15-Plate Water Ionizers Any Good? 

So, the news that 15-plate water ionizers were finding their way to the market was certainly interesting! Tyent’s position at the forefront of the water ionizer industry means that we’re always excited to see new concepts and ideas emerging, and this one had arrived with a certain amount of hype. But 15 plates? Are 15 plates really worth it? Naturally, we had to find out!  

 

Water Ionizer Plates: Three Things You Cannot Ignore! 

When it comes to water ionizer plates, there are a few non-negotiable truths. No matter how many plates are inside a water ionizer, the following three points are the ones to watch when considering which machine to buy: 

  • What is the plate constructed from? 
  • What is the surface area of the individual plate?  
  • Is it a solid plate, a mesh plate, or solid/mesh hybrid design? 

The materials used in the construction of water ionizer plates are of utmost importance. A water ionizer is an investment buy. These plates must last many years and maintain the same performance in 10- or 20 years’ time as the day you bought your water ionizer.  

 

Super Strong Plates 

As mentioned above, Tyent plates are made from the most durable construction materials possible – titanium and platinum. Anything less than this is already inferior. These two materials combined create the best possible plate for strength and durability.  

 

The Importance of Surface Area 

Surface area is another key point. More surface area means more electrolysis happening inside the water ionizer. That’s why size matters with plates. 

 

Are Your Plates Solid, Mesh or Hybrid? 

This leads us neatly on to the type of plate – solid, mesh or hybrid?  

Some water ionizer companies stick with solid plates because they’re stronger. However, solid plates have less available surface area for electrolysis. Other companies use mesh-type plates to create more surface area, but this means compromising on strength. Mesh plates are weaker and less durable than solid plates; while solid plates are stronger but have reduced surface area.  

The best type of plate is a solid/mesh hybrid plate. These are engineered to have greater surface area, while maintaining the integrity and strength of a solid plate. Water ionizer plates are integral to the machine. Generally, the size, quality and construction of the individual plates and NOT the number of them are key to exceptional performance.  

 

Is Your Kitchen Big Enough for 15 Plates? 

Let’s look at the reality of a water ionizer machine with 15 plates. Broadly speaking, these machines are likely to be much bigger than a machine with 13 plates or less. To house the plates, the water ionizers are likely to be outsized and look unwieldy and bulky in the average kitchen. Not a dealbreaker, but something to bear in mind.  

 

Price –v- Value for Money 

What is a dealbreaker when it comes to buying a water ionizer? For most people, it will be a combination of price and value for money.  

The 15-plate machines push the envelope when it comes to price. These big beasts are pricey. But are they worth every cent? If you’re paying a premium for those 15 plates, is it truly worth it?  

Well, let’s look at the performance data. In tests, the 15-plate machine delivered alkaline water in the range of 1.7 pH to 12.2 pH. In the same tests, the Tyent ACE-13 produced an alkaline water range of 1.7 pH -12.5 pH.  

 

ORP & Filtration 

What about Oxygen Reduction Potential (ORP)? This is a key aspect of ionized water – antioxidants. ORP is the potency, or sheer strength of the antioxidants in the water to neutralize damaging free radicals. ORP is measured in negative values: the greater the negative -ORP value, the more potent the antioxidant potential of your water. 

With that quick reminder, let’s look again at the test results of a 15-plate machine – a respectable maximum of -1005 ORP. The same test with the 13-plate Tyent ACE-13 produces an ORP level of up to –1150. 

What about filtration? Let’s face it, that’s one other essential feature of a water ionizer. For a machine that is more expensive than most other water ionizers on sale today, the 15-plate models only contain one filter. At this price bracket, that’s not enough. 2 filters are standard when you’re spending this much money – clean, contaminant-free water is everything. 

 

Great or Gimmick? 

15 plates sure is a lot, but does the number of plates make any appreciable difference once you get past the 13-plate point?  

There is a certain logic in assuming that the more plates a company piles into its water ionizer machines, the better that machine must be. To an extent, that’s correct, but there is a tipping point – the point at which the number of plates becomes a gimmick, rather than a useful, productive part of the water ionization process.  

The other thing to remember is that the number of plates a water ionizer contains is only part of the equation. As with so many things, two main points apply: quality matters, and the devil is in the detail. 

 

The Conclusion: Are 15 Plates Worth It? 

We’re not saying that 15-plate water ionizers have no place on the market. If your kitchen (and budget!) are big enough, they can look pretty good.  

But the question we started with remains. Are they worth it? 

The answer has to be no. In a sense, it’s rather like the law of diminishing returns. You pay more, but you’re no longer receiving any extra benefit for the additional cost. 

A Tyent 13-plate (or even fewer) water ionizer, in which the plates are solid/mesh hybrid type; constructed from titanium and platinum and are large and strong, delivers a performance that matches and then exceeds the performance of the 15-plate model. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the 15-plate version, it’s just not worth paying more for.  

It’s possible that we’ll see more of this kind of thing – water ionizer gimmicks that grab an industry headline or two – but until there’s any actual, measurable benefit for the customer, our advice is to scroll on by.

Enagic’s Kangen Water machines are sold under a multi-level marketing pyramid scheme structure. Although this has been going on for some time, ABC News dug into the facts and exposed the concerning scheme in a 2024 exposé.

Despite promises of high returns, 99% of Kangen Water machine sellers earn less than $14,000 annually, with 60% making just $285 per year. Many lose money on products or “coaching,” which often involves fabricating success stories to recruit others. Enagic appears more focused on promoting its MLM scheme than selling ionizers.

If sellers have trouble affording products, Enagic offers finance plans. But the fine print reveals that if individuals fail to make payments within a specific time frame, the 10% per annum interest rate jumps all the way to 25%.

Concerning BBB Complaints

Enagic holds an F rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with more than 25 complaints filed against the business. If you’re investing in a water ionizer, choose a company you can trust, like Tyent, which has an A+ rating from the BBB.

Kangen Machines Use Deadly Chemicals

Enagic’s top selling points include that it can create “Strong” Kangen Water, which is alkaline water with a very high pH, or acidic water, which is water with a pH below 7.0. But Kangen machines require an “electrolysis enhancer” to make these types of water—one that is clearly marked “Not for drinking.” Plus, Kangen doesn’t educate customers on how to properly handle the chemical enhancer.

The makeup of the “enhancer” is processed water, sodium chloride, and sodium hypochlorite—better known as bleach. On the other hand, Tyent ionizers are certified chemical-free.

Unsupported Antioxidant Claims

Another of Enagic’s top selling points is that Kangen water has strong antioxidant properties. When we talk about antioxidants in water, we need to look at the ionizer’s oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). The lower the ORP, the higher the antioxidant properties. 

While Enagic claims Kangen Water machines have a low ORP, that’s far from the truth. Enagic says that the K8 is its “most powerful antioxidant machine.” But its ORP is only -722 mV. In comparison, Tyent ionizers have an ORP of up to -1150 mV. 

Minimal Hydrogen Levels Due to Lack of Plates

Enagic doesn’t list how much molecular hydrogen their ionizers infuse into their Kangen Water. But the makeup of these machines suggests the water they produce is not as “hydrogen-rich” as they say.

The most powerful Kangen Water machine only uses eight solid electrode plates. Some models use as little as four. Solid plates have a lower surface area, which leads to slower and weaker electrolysis. On the other hand, Tyent uses solid/mesh hybrid medical-grade titanium plates that are the strongest and thickest in the industry and have the highest surface area, leading to water with the most molecular hydrogen of any ionizer on the market.

Very Expensive Machines with Short Guarantees 

Kangen Water machines are the most expensive water ionizers on the market, ranging between $4,000 and $6,000. And if you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you may be out of luck.

These machines only come with 3-year or 5-year limited warranties with numerous stipulations. Getting an extended warranty means shelling out an additional $600, and that only gives you three more years of coverage.

Tyent, however, offers a full lifetime warranty with no fine print or hoops to jump through.

Short Trial Periods

In addition to having a complex limited warranty, Enagic only gives you a 7-day window to test and return your Kangen Water machine. If you miss the window, you could lose up to $1,100, not to mention the shipping fees.

When you purchase a Tyent ionizer, you have a 75-day trial and return period. (But less than 1% of users ever return their Tyent ionizer.)

Poor Customer Support

Numerous reviews call Enagic’s customer support “rude” and “terrible.” Reviewers say that they were frequently lied to and were also often blamed when they told customer support that their machines weren’t working.

Kangen Water Review: Does It Even Work?

Like you, I wanted to buy a water ionizer machine. I did my research (but not enough by half) and decided to buy a Kangen machine from Enagic. After all, the company had been around for a while, which had to count for something, right? 

The truth is, Enagic operates as a multi-level marketing (MLM) company, which often results in significant pressure to purchase their products, especially when the distributor is a close friend or family member. MLM companies typically rely on a network of distributors who earn commissions not only from their own sales but also from the sales made by their recruits. This structure can create high-pressure sales tactics and a focus on recruitment over product quality. But are they worth the expense? 

While Enagic’s Kangen machines are just as expensive as competitor models, they fail to achieve the same levels of pH or Oxygen Reduction Potential (ORP). To reach their extreme levels, Kangen machines require the use of chemical enhancers, namely sodium hypochlorite, also known as bleach. You may want to think about purchasing one of these machines if you don’t want to be chemically poisoned.

What is Kangen Water?

Kangen water ionization machines are produced by Enagic. The word “Kangen” actually means “return to origin” in Japanese. 

Enagic says that the alkaline water these machines produce can “help restore the body to its original, alkaline state.” The Kangen water ionizer machine works to alkaline the body, purify drinking water, and increase antioxidant production potential.

What is Ionized Water?

In simple terms, ionization means to gain or lose an electron. Water that has been ionized becomes either alkaline or acidic, which means that the pH has been adjusted up or down. 

Alkaline water is full of Hydroxyl ions and loaded with measurable antioxidants, making it ideal for drinking. Acidic water is full of Hydrogen ions. This water can be applied to the outside of our bodies to help soothe the skin or even for plant growth.

Water ionizing machines are small household appliances that calibrate the pH level of regular tap water in order to make it more alkaline or acidic.

Enagic Water vs Kangen Water

Kangen Water is a brand name for ionized alkaline water produced by Enagic’s alkaline ionizer and water filtration machines. The Enagic team claims that kangen water is “restructured” and that it makes it different from the normal alkaline water.

What to Know Before Buying a Kangen Water Machine

Here are some of the things to know before buying any Kangen or Enagic water.

1. All Water Ionizers are NOT the Same

All water ionizers are not the same. When buying a Kangen machine, you could think it was the right thing. Some research says that the company is well established–and that must mean that they were building solid, powerful machines. This isn’t necessarily true. 

Though Kangen is more expensive than many other water ionizers, it still doesn’t produce water as rich in antioxidants and hydrogen molecules as machines like Tyent, for example.

Let’s say you resolved to look past the water quality and focus on the fact that drinking water from a Kangen machine was still better than tap or bottled water.

Then a local water issue happened–a pesticide spill happened at a nearby farmland that the papers reported on and had local people worrying about how much of it might end up coming out of the tap. At this point, you may feel just a little smug, thinking that the Kangen water ionizer would take out the contaminants, and all would be well. 

So, you checked Enagic’s website for a list of contaminants that your Kangen machine would remove. Then you checked again. No list. You didn’t know whether your shiny new Kangen machine would remove any pesticides or not. You suddenly realized that you hadn’t checked which contaminants Kangen filters remove–and the company wasn’t exactly great at telling you either.

Common sense told you that the only reason that a company doesn’t boast about how great its filters are, is because its filters aren’t that great.

2. Kangen Machines Use A Deadly Chemical to Help Them Work Properly

That thing about how powerful water ionizers are? Turns out it really does matter. And Kangen machines aren’t powerful enough to make the “strong” acidic water that they’re so proud of. 

Your Kangen machine needs an “Electrolysis Enhancer” added to it to make up for the power it did not possess. What’s in “Electrolysis Enhancer,” you might ask? Wait for it: sodium hypochlorite, AKA bleach. 

Unfortunately, Enagic fails to inform Kangen water owners of the proper handling of the chlorine it creates. Chlorine in water can take three different forms: chlorine gas, hypochlorous acid, or hypochlorite. The form in which chlorine appears is pH-dependent.

So you spent thousands of dollars on a Kangen/Enagic water ionizer so that your family could drink contaminant-free water…and then you need to add bleach to the machine itself. Worse, a quick internet search told you that if sodium hypochlorite is ionized, a toxic gas is produced.

Just what you want from a water ionizer, right? And Kangen knows all of this.

3. Kangen Machines: Expensive with Short Guarantees 

You have had a Kangen ionizer machine for a year now. That’s nothing…but you’re already one-third of the way through my warranty period. Plus, Enagic isn’t upfront about the fact that their business model is the dreaded Multi-Level Marketing scheme, which means you paid LOTS more money for a pretty basic machine.

4. Trial Times 

Kangen water comes with major deficiencies. Typically, customers want to try a Kangen machine before buying it. With such a high-cost ionizer machine, you would expect to be able to try it out with your unique kitchen sink and water system before making a final decision. 

Guess how long the trial period was (bear in mind we’re talking about a machine that costs several thousand dollars). Three days! This timeline barely gives you enough time to unbox the product. By contrast, Tyent offers a 75-day, risk-free trial period, so you really get to road-test your water ionizer.

5. Plate Erosion

One selling point of the Kangen machine that Enagic promotes is its large plates. The issue is that there isn’t sufficient machine power for these large plates. The lack of power is why the Kangen machine struggles to reach over a pH of 10, and some people have to add calcium glycerophosphate (a drug compound) to their Kangen machine to get acceptable pH levels.

Enagic tries to justify the high price of its machine by claiming that it takes a lot of platinum to coat its plates. 

6. Antioxidant Claims Aren’t Supported by Evidence

Along with many other claims of Kangen water features, the antioxidant claims are not sufficiently supported by evidence. 

Antioxidant properties are another often-discussed benefit of Kangen water. Enagic’s theory is that the negative ORP of Kangen water can act as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and preventing cell damage. Though this sounds great, much more research is needed to prove these effects.

Kangen Water Review

Kangen Water claims to have created a healthy and high-quality water system, but it fails to tell you all that’s involved in the process. Kangen has many BBB complaints, chemicals, poor customer support, warranty, and trial period issues that are very unsettling to the safety of their products and quality of customer care. 

Enagic is also an MLM (multi-level marketing) company with eight levels of commissions. This shows how little amount of money actually goes into building a safe and effective water system for customers.

“They will tell you it is a salt solution, but the main ingredients in their chemical additives are sodium chloride & sodium hypochlorite, which are also the main ingredients in your bleach bottle. You have to flush your machine for many gallons after using this additive, but I would not feel comfortable with using that in the same machine my kids are drinking from. The Properties of Kangen Water 

There are four properties of Kangen water claims they include: 

1. Hydrogen: Water that is hydrogen-rich has a high concentration of Molecular Hydrogen (H2). Molecular Hydrogen is an efficient antioxidant that diffuses rapidly across cell membranes and can reduce free radicals, suppressing oxidative stress. Through electrolysis, tap water can become hydrogen-rich.

2. Antioxidants: To reduce oxidative stress and related damage, a constant supply of external sources of antioxidants should be part of one‘s daily diet. This is why everyone should care about the quantity and quality of the water they drink. 

3. Alkaline: A pH scale is used to determine whether a substance is acidic or alkaline. On this scale, 7.0 is neutral. Anything above seven is considered alkaline, and anything below seven is considered acidic.Kangen machines have set “types” of water that have set pH levels that can’t be adjusted, and are meant to serve different functions, i.e. drinking water, beauty water, etc. However, if your source water is very acidic, you won’t be able to turn up the power to achieve a higher pH level. Similarly, the same limitation applies to the opposite pH levels.

Just like pH, ORP values are an important measurement for determining the quality of water.

It’s important to note that Kangen water claims to include these properties but cannot back them up. Their machines have minimal hydrogen levels due to a lack of plates and power. Kangen water is also bleached with Sodium Hypochlorite and uses an artificial method of increasing electrolysis.

Kangen machines use outdated technology. They use a Transformer Power Supply, which means the power cannot be adjusted to achieve the alkaline or acidic levels you are looking for according to your source water minerals. 

Types of Kangen Water

There are five types of Kangen water: 

  1. Strong Kangen Water – pH 11

This water is not for drinking but rather for food preparation and cleaning.

  1. Kangen Water – pH 8.5-9.5

This type of water is for drinking and cooking. It can also be used for coffee and tea and watering plants.

  1. Clean Water – pH 7

Free of chlorine, rust, and cloudiness, neutral water is for drinking. It can be used to prepare baby food and take medication.

  1. Beauty Water – pH 4-6 

This is not for drinking. Beauty water is slightly acidic and is recognized for its astringent effects. Use it for face wash, hair care, pet care, polishing, cleaning, and preserving frozen food.

  1. Strong Acidic Water pH 2.7

This is not for drinking water since it has cleansing properties. This water can be used for cleaning and reducing germs, hygiene, and commercial operations.
