Is drinking Smart water truly the smart choice?
Smart Water Vs. Alkaline Water: The Low Down
What Is Smart Water? Also called Glaceau Smartwater, it is a brand of bottled water owned by Coca Cola. It is usually distilled to remove minerals and electrolytes but still has some of them, such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium added back.
Smart Water Comes from Tap Water
The hard truth is bottled water can be the exact same water you can get at home from the tap, but with an attached Smart Water price tag. It comes from the creator’s mouth himself: Smart Water starts out as tap water before undergoing the vapor distillation process.
The process has the tap water run through charcoal for purification and disinfecting. Electrolytes and choice minerals are then reintroduced.
Smart Water Undergoes Distillation
Distilled water means it’s purified or has gone through a thorough filtering process to remove traces of contaminants like viruses, bacteria, as well as heavy metals like arsenic, mercury, and aluminum.
On the downside, the filtration process can be indiscriminate with its job, even taking away healthy minerals already present in the water such as magnesium and potassium. Without these healthy elements and minerals in the water, its hydrogen content grows, thereby making the water highly acidic.
Depriving the Smart Water ingredients of minerals during the filtration process also leads the water into trying to balance out. The water does this by leeching minerals from your body, and even contaminants from its containers, which are usually plastic bottles.
Plastic water bottles actually pose a danger to your health. The plastic that goes into making water bottles contain harmful chemicals such as bisphenol A that has links to many health problems, and phthalates that can mimic and disrupt hormones.
Smart Water Has Electrolytes, but…
While electrolytes are ions essential to the body (leading the list are potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium), they are only ever beneficial to actual athletes. People who undergo rigorous endurance training often burn through energy and mineral stores so much throughout the day that they need a constant supply of Smart Water electrolytes to keep going.
A Better Alternative
Alkaline water is a better alternative to Smart Water, as it retains alkaline compounds like salts, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, among others.
The higher the content of alkaline compounds, the higher the water’s pH level becomes. Normal tap water having a meek 7 pH level (or lower, yikes!); alkaline water has 8 to 9.5 pH which is ideal for drinking.
Alkaline water helps neutralize an acidic bloodstream and provides better hydration. The ionization process that produces alkaline water makes water molecules smaller and more permeable to the cells, allowing easy absorption and transport of nutrients.
With big companies having highly effective marketing strategies in place just to get you to buy bottles of water you can just get at home, extra care and vigilance are needed when it comes to drinking water for your health.
Always do your research when seeing so-called healthier water. Look at ingredients, how it’s filtered, and if you can do one better by just installing an ionizer at home for 24/7 access to alkaline water.
