Why Do Plants Need Water? | The Basics of Plant Food Production

Why Is Water Important to Plants?

Do you ever wonder, “Why do plants need water, or why do plants wilt?” Even a bigger question is, why do living things need water, or why is water necessary for life?

All living things in the environment—animals, humans, and, yes, even the houseplants—require a certain amount of water to survive. Science will also tell you a person’s need for water is no different from that of a plant, such as trees and shrubs.

1. Water Accounts for a Huge Percentage of the Body Composition

Animals, humans, and plants have water, although the percentages can vary. Water, for example, makes up about 60% of the human body.

Plants, meanwhile, can hold as much as 90%. The saguaro cactus in the deserts can store over 150 gallons of water when there’s a heavy downpour.

2. Water Helps Maintain Turgidity

Most living things, such as plants and humans, have a certain level of turgidity or turgor. Another term for it is tension.

When something has poor turgidity, it can be a sign of dehydration. In humans, it can be visible in the skin – it doesn’t snap back quickly when pinched. In plants, it’s when the leaves begin to wilt.

It occurs when the cell walls, which make up the plant’s skeleton and necessary for water movement, experience a drop in the water pressure due to lack of water. Water and minerals cannot reach the leaves.

3. It Is Responsible for the Production of Energy

Consider plant cells like vehicles: if they don’t have fuel, they stop working. When it happens, the organism ceases to exist.

It needs to produce energy to make the cells function and produce food for itself. One of the essential components for that is water.

Photosynthesis, for example, needs water – apart from carbon dioxide.

4. Water Helps Plants Fulfill Their Purpose in Nature

Why do plants need water?

In the food chain, you’ll find plants in the lowest levels, which means they help sustain the existence of those above them. Humans who consume them can also benefit from the plant nutrients, which include vitamins and minerals.

Plants help prevent soil erosion or excessive water runoff from the mountains.

They prevent disasters such as landslides or flooding in the lower grounds. They reduce the risk of water pollution.

Most of all, they play a role in symbiosis.

What is Symbiosis? It refers to the interaction or relationship of two or more species living closely within an ecosystem. Usually, it results in mutual benefits.

Plants give off oxygen during the process of photosynthesis, which the humans then breathe. Humans, meanwhile, release carbon dioxide, which the plants require.

How Can Hydrogen Help Plants?

According to a research published in 2014, hydrogen can help plants shield themselves from environmental stressors like the change in soil pH, draught, heavy metals, and extreme cold.

Observations also reported that the presence of extra hydrogen molecules in plants can better their flowering or growth time. This led to the conclusion that hydrogen may have a potential in the agricultural industry.

Tyent Water and Plants

Tyent water is a great way to keep your plants healthy and alive or even bring them back from the dead! It’s not just rich in hydrogen, it also has an alkaline pH.

Water from Tyent ionizers has been filtered from dangerous metals and organisms, ensuring safety for your green living things. And, while doing so, it retains (even adds) the necessary minerals for growth and development.

We get a lot of wonderful testimonials from our customers. One of these was a plant testimonial we received from our customer, Ron Barsotti.

In his before-and-after pictures of a bamboo plant, he let soak in alkaline level 2 (pH 8.5–9.5) water. The plant looked dead in the first picture and alive and green in the second picture!

Why do plants need water? The answer is simple: it is essential for its and our survival. Without plants, we won’t be here!

The trees, shrubs, vines, and flowers, though, come in many various types. Different plants prefer different pH levels for water and soil so make sure you check with your local garden center if you’re unsure about the best water for your plants.

If you wish to grow plants in alkaline soil, you can benefit from using hydrogen or Tyent alkaline water instead of tap water. The preservation of minerals and increase in hydrogen atoms can restore the plants to good condition.

  1. I was always told to water plants with acidic water not alkaline…that alkaline water is needed to kill bacteria so plants can thrive… I thought alkaline water is for internal/ingestion whereas acidic water is for external use, such as cleaning and plants?

    1. Hi, Elizabeth. You’re correct by saying that alkaline water is for drinking and acidic water is for cleaning. With Tyent, you can also use your alkaline water to clean your vegetables, fruits, and meats before eating them. Depending on the level, our acidic water is used mainly to rinse your hair and skin and clean surfaces and items. When it comes to taking care of your garden, which is full of living organisms. it’s best to check what pH levels your plants need to determine what kind of water you should give them. Happy planting!

If you want to know more about the benefits and uses of our alkaline and acidic water, we suggest you get our Ultimate Alkaline Water Guide, which contains more that 75 uses for our water!

    1. Hi, Lily. Yes, alkaline water from a Tyent ionizer can also be used for other purposes like gardening, cooking, and washing your fruits and vegetables (specifically, Turbo Water removes the residue of oil-based herbicides and pesticides).

On the other hand, you should never drink acidic water. Depending on the level, though, acidic water can be used to tone your skin, rinse your hair, and clean your home.
