Is Hydrogen Water the Same as Alkaline Water?

TyentUSA Blog Team

Hydrogen water and alkaline water describe two different properties. Hydrogen water contains dissolved molecular hydrogen gas (H₂), while alkaline water has a pH above 7. A glass of water can have both properties, which is why the names sometimes appear together.

Keep reading to learn what each label tells you and how Tyent ionizers bring hydrogen and alkaline pH together.

Does an Alkaline Label Mean Water Contains Hydrogen?

An alkaline label tells you the water’s pH. A label that says “pH 9” means the water is more alkaline than neutral water at pH 7.

The pH number alone won’t tell you how much dissolved hydrogen is in your glass. Naturally occurring minerals or added alkaline compounds can raise the pH without adding molecular hydrogen. Hydrogen water can also have a neutral pH because dissolving H₂ gas in water does not itself change its acidity or alkalinity.

What makes H₂ exciting is its potential to support your body at the cellular level. Researchers have explored its antioxidant effects, including its ability to target highly reactive molecules involved in oxidative stress.

To check hydrogen content, look for a dissolved H₂ measurement in parts per million (ppm).

How Can Water Be Both Hydrogen-Rich and Alkaline?

A water ionizer uses electrolysis to separate water into two streams: alkaline water and acidic water. An electrical current passes between electrodes inside the machine, raising the pH on one side and lowering it on the other. Hydrogen gas forms on the alkaline side, and some of that gas dissolves into the water.

Our ionizers use this process to give you fresh, hydrogen-rich alkaline water on demand, with select models producing up to 1.8+ ppm molecular hydrogen. You can choose different pH settings for daily drinking, stronger alkaline or acidic settings for household cleaning, and milder acidic settings for external skin and hair care.
