Scary Stuff…3 Serious Reasons to Ditch the Diet Soda Today!

For most of us, it’s true to say that you’re never very far from a can of diet soda.  The soda can is so ubiquitous in our lives that we hardly notice it sitting on a co-worker’s desk, and we barely flinch when they’re thrust into our children’s hands at parties.  We have a vague idea that they’re not exactly great for our health, but they’re sugar-free, right?  So how bad can it be, exactly?  Let’s look the other way again.

It’s what they don’t list on the can that’s the problem.
It’s what they don’t list on the can that’s the problem.

Or not.  You see, diet soda is not good for your health.  Many argue that it doesn’t even occupy a neutral ground, that it’s actually harmful.  Let’s take a closer look.

The Cancer Risk

In 2011, the Center For Science in the Public Interest filed a petition with the FDA stating that two ingredients, 2-Methylimidazole and 4-Methylimidazole which occur in the caramel coloring used frequently in popular soda drinks are carcinogens.

“Soft drink consumers are being exposed to an avoidable and unnecessary cancer risk from an ingredient that is being added to these beverages simply for aesthetic purposes.

This unnecessary exposure poses a threat to public health and raises questions about the continued use of caramel coloring in soda.”  ~ Dr Nachman, Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Accelerated Aging One

Many soda drinks contain the preservative phosphoric acid.  Apart from its ability to erode your tooth enamel, and its links to kidney problems, phosphoric acid also helps you to get old faster, according to a laboratory study in 2010 which saw that rats fed phosphoric acid died a full five weeks before the test subjects that had not been fed the substance.

“The results of our dietary and genetic manipulation studies provide in vivo evidence for phosphate toxicity accelerating the aging process” ~ Ohnishi, M., Razzaque

The All-Round Health Scare

In 2015, the British Medical Journal published a study indicating that drinkers of diet soda are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Artificially sweetened beverages and fruit juice were both positively associated with incident type 2 diabetes, but likely to involve bias, and seemed not to be healthy options for the prevention of type 2 diabetes (Conclusion)
