How Hydrogen-Rich Alkaline Water Affects Athletic Performance

Hydrogen is an amazing and important element, full of contradictions. On one hand, it is the simplest atom of the periodic table with the chemical number 1, indicating its make-up of one electron and one proton. However, for all its simplicity, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe with properties that are vital to life as we know it.

Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that hydrogen has also been called the “element of life,” a nickname that qualifies hydrogen-rich alkaline water to be called the “water of life.”

Hydrogen Water: What is it exactly?

Hydrogen water is exactly what it sounds like, that is, water that has a higher concentration of hydrogen than tap water. Tyent water ionizers use electrolysis to change the chemistry of water by raising the pH to create alkaline water. By definition, alkaline liquids have an increased number of free hydrogen atoms (or H-) each of which contains an extra electron.

Since free H- atoms are not bound to water molecules, and they have an extra electron, they act as strong antioxidants in the body. This means they reduce oxidative stress and protect DNA by neutralizing free radicals, but how does hydrogen-rich alkaline water affect athletes?

Hydrogen Water and Sports

During intense exercise, our bodies release lactic acid as a waste product of muscle contraction which has oxidative effects on the body. As an antioxidant, hydrogen water might be able to reduce the oxidative stress caused by exercise by neutralizing some of the acid. In fact, a 2012 study performed by sports scientists at the University of Tsukubu in Japan tested the same premise.

For the study, 10 soccer players were given hydrogen water or a placebo water and told to exercise. After a period of physical exertion, blood levels of lactate were measured in both groups. Not surprisingly, the study concluded that,

“Adequate hydration with hydrogen-rich water pre-exercise reduced blood lactate levels and improved exercise-induced decline of muscle function…these preliminary results may suggest that HW may be suitable hydration for athletes.”

Hydrogen Water Is a Sporting Drink

The benefits of hydrogen-rich alkaline water are not limited to athletes. Anyone can enjoy the antioxidant properties of hydrogen water in their own home with a Tyent water ionizer.

For sports. For life. For the universe. Drink hydrogen-rich Tyent alkaline water.

    1. Hi, Pierre. Yes, that’s correct. Hydrogen-rich alkaline water is what Tyent specializes in. Molecular hydrogen is the smallest and most powerful antioxidant on the planet, able to penetrate our cells, which makes our water extra hydrating and health-boosting.
