What Is Reverse Osmosis Water?

Reverse osmosis water is defined as ‘purified water.’ It means that all the sediment, heavy metals, hard minerals, nutrients, viruses, and bacteria (both good and bad) are no longer present.

Reverse osmosis water is produced by applying pressure to force undrinkable water through semi-permeable membranes in order to remove particles and contaminants from the water.

When executed properly, reverse osmosis works well – too well. And that’s the problem.

Why is Reverse Osmosis Water ‘Too’ Clean?

The process of reverse osmosis is incredibly efficient. It removes everything from contaminated water, and we mean everything.

It is because of this that while reverse osmosis is brilliant and positively lifesaving in emergency situations, it is completely unsuitable for drinking every day in place of regular water.

What Are the Dangers of Drinking Reverse Osmosis Water?

Reverse osmosis water can be considered ‘unstable’ due to its complete lack of minerals. When it comes into contact with a potential source of minerals, it will attempt to aggressively bond with them. In the human body, that means that it will seek to re-mineralize itself by drawing on the minerals in bones and teeth. Demineralized water will also drastically reduce the minerals and vitamins from any food cooked in it for the same reason

Also, reverse osmosis water is less hydrating than even untreated tap water. This is because it contains zero mineral electrolytes which support healthy hydration.

Reverse Osmosis Water and Water Waste

Reverse osmosis is not an efficient way to clean water for regular daily consumption. In order to remove contaminants, reverse osmosis systems can waste up to 85% of the water it processes. On average, 4 gallons of wastewater is produced to every gallon of potable water.
