Potential Effects of Microplastic Exposure on Tap Water

Fancy a side order of microplastic particles with that glass of tap water? If you choose to drink water from the faucet, then you might not get a choice.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics is a word that commonly refers to plastic contamination in the form of minute particles.

Microplastics are rife in bottled water and are also coursing through the municipal water in virtually every town and city in the US.

“We knew that this plastic is coming back to us through our food chain. Now we see it is coming back to us through our drinking water. Do we have a way out?”

—Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize laureate

Microplastics is a fairly non-specific term, referring to any type of plastic under 5mm long that pollute our environment and oceans.

Are microplastics found in tap water?

Yes. Although the numbers make sobering reading in virtually every corner of the world, the US has one of the highest rates of contamination with an estimated 94% of tap water samples from around the country observed to contain microplastics.

Can microplastics be removed from tap water?

Few filtration systems can remove microplastics. One method of removing them is to use a reverse osmosis system. However, a reverse osmosis system should only be used in limited circumstances, as extended periods of drinking exclusively reverse osmosis water can raise a whole different set of health issues.

Are microplastics dangerous to health?

It’s early days in terms of scientific research and trying to quantify the myriad ways that microplastics might impact on health. Scientists do know that many of these plastic particles are tiny enough to enter the bloodstream and settle into the tissues of your vital organs.

Laboratory tests on animals have also established that microplastics can cross the placental barrier and pass to the fetus.

Although scientists are working quickly to assess the extent of the health risks, it is currently known that the microplastics we consume are bonded to toxic chemical pollutants. These pollutants are already linked to illnesses, conditions and diseases including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Reproductive issues
  • Neural abnormalities
  • Obesity

Can a water ionizer help to reduce the number of microplastics I drink?

Tyent water ionizers feature some of the most groundbreaking filtration technology in the world.

Tyent Ultra Plus Filters are third-party laboratory tested and have the same type of filtration power as that found in hospital kidney dialysis machines – .01-micron level. Compare Tyent filtration technology to that of our competitors – there’s no contest when it comes to drinking safe, clean water.

Our filters also remove over 200 contaminants, including:

  • Up to 99% of lead
  • Mercury
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Beryllium
  • Radioactive radium (with a 4-bank pre-filter)

Better for Your Family, Better For You

Drinking delicious, hydrogen-rich alkaline water from a water ionizer means getting back some control over the microplastics that you consume and supporting overall good health at the same time.

Switch your bottled and tap water for a water ionizer and dramatically reduce the amount of microplastics that your family is exposed to – call our friendly team for more advice today at .

  1. MICROPLASTICS!!! This is horrifying to read, but it must be made known to everyone! Plastic particles in the very water we drink, think of the damage this is doing to your insides.
Whoever is reading this just buy a Tyent, no excuses. Best money I ever spent. I have at age 69 the health of a 30 year old.
Note to TYENT, I need a travel size ionizer…..

    1. Hi, Dakota. We’re with you! That’s why we advise that you drink water that’s been filtered and ionized by a water ionizer to ensure that your glass will be free of harmful contaminants and particles.
